Create Your Own Website
The most flexible option for publishing your material on the Web is to create your own website. You can control the structure, layout, and look of your site, so you should be able to create exactly the type of site you want - subject to the limitations of websites and the tools you use. The disadvantage to creating your own site is that doing so typically takes more effort that using the other options discussed later in this article.
Deciding Where to Host Your Site
If you decide to create your own site, you need to decide where to host it:
Space provided by your ISP Many ISPs provide web space with your Internet service along with one or more e-mail addresses. If your web-publishing plans are modest, this space may be more than adequate. When choosing an ISP, factor in how much web space they give you and how much traffic they allow your site before charging you for extra bandwidth.
Other Web hosts If your ISP doesn’t provide adequate space or bandwidth, you can use a web-hosting firm instead. Such firms specialize in hosting websites and registering domains. For a reliable website, it’s usually best to pay a modest fee for web hosting. Creating Web Content
When you have your own website, you can use any program capable of producing HTML to create your web pages. Here are some examples:

Getting Material to Your Website
The standard way of getting material onto your website is to create and assemble the material offline and then upload it to the website via FTP. If you’re uploading a new version of a page, the upload overwrites the existing page. You can spend as long as you need to create and save the content, and because the files you’re working with are stored on a local drive, you can access them at full speed.
Using Windows Vista’s FTP Capabilities
Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer include basic FTP capabilities. To transfer files via Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer, take the following steps:
1. Choose Start Internet. Windows launches Internet Explorer.
2. In the Address bar, enter the FTP address, username, and password if you choose using the following format:
ftp://username:password@ftpserver/url
3. Click the Go button or press the Enter key. If you specified your password, Internet Explorer connects to the FTP server and displays the folder. If you chose not to specify your password, Internet Explorer displays the Login As dialog box, in which you can enter your password and choose whether to save it.
Create a Favorite for the FTP Site
Once you’ve connected to the FTP site, create a favorite for it so that you can access it quickly in the future. The FTP site appears in the Internet Explorer window as a series of links:
• Click the Up to Higher Level Directory link to go up to the parent directory or folder the folder that contains the folder you’re currently viewing.
• Click the link for a folder to open that folder.
• Click the link for a file to download that file.
